Hi Brett!  Thank you so much for all of your work on the new NFA website!  It is looking great.  I've written up some suggestions for you to consider for the site and I've tried to categorize them a little bit.  If you have any questions about this feel free to reach out.

The gray link color on top of the yellow background is a little hard to read, and probably does not meet web accessibility requirements because there is not enough contrast between the gray and the yellow.  I'd recommend making the background color something other than pale yellow (maybe just white, or a really light gray?), and I'd recommend changing the link color as well.  Blue is a very standard link color and might look nice with this beautiful picture you have in the background!

I'd recommend only using a red font for an error or alert message.

I'd recommend trying to have more consistent font styles and sizes. Right now there are a lot of different fonts, some are bold, some are italics, and several font types too.  Try to have a more consistent styling. Different font styles are okay, but should be used intentionally to convey some type of hierarchy on the page, for example.

    Image slideshow:

If possible, I'd suggest removing the transitions between the photos, or stick to a simple fade - simpler is better.

I'd also suggest only cycling through the images once in the slideshow and then have it stop and just show one, otherwise it gets a little distracting.  I'm not sure if the slideshow you're using will let you customize it that much, so if it doesn't, I'd recommend limiting how many pages you put the slideshow on.

There is a small dot indicator within the navigation that is used to indicate the active page/section - this is cool, but the dot is really small, if it is possible I'd try making it more obvious, like a line under the title instead.

    NFA logo:

I'd suggest putting the logo in the top left corner instead of on the right, it is a standard convention to put the logo on the top left, but certainly not required.

    Home page:

There needs to be a little more spacing around the content on the left side of the home page, it bumps up against the edge of the container.

I'll try to review the site a little more today and can send over some more feedback later today or tomorrow if I have any.

Thanks again for all of your work putting this together!!

    - Carleigh

    Hi Brett,

I was able to register someone other than myself for a conservation outing. Not looking for an atta boy (IT jargon). I'm thinking that maybe there should be a layer of something to prevent that from being so easy even I could do it.

Thank you for using the site.

Were you logged in as a member when you did that?

Do we allow the public to sign up for conservation outings?

Thank you for your comments. They were helpful.

Fonts/Colors: I changed the link colors - I'm not sure why Wild Apricot used the default settings the way they did. I wasn't worried about the background color being web safe. I did try out the colors and font on Chrome, Safari and Firefox. The background color is #ffffda and there is one that is web safe #fffff0. I would prefer to stay away from pure white and darker grays. Here is a link to the web safe colors and you can pick out one you think is more appropriate - I have also made you an admin on the site and you can experiment if you so chose. I used the red font in instructions when I thought were important to follow. Wild Apricot seems to use different fonts/sizes for different pages and widgets (they call them gadgets). In particular they like Roberto Condensed, Verdana and Pt Sans among others. Eventually I will try to make it more consistent. Let me know if you see any down right egregious issues that affect your sensibilities.

Image slideshow: If it was up to me I would eliminate it altogether. I really don't think it adds anything - it is only there because the previous site had one. The settings on the slide show are very restrictive (i.e., not a lot of customization capability) unless I modify the CSS, which I am very hesitant to do right now. I changed the transition to fade, allowed the viewer to cycle through the pages (which I don't like), and changed the visible time of each image to 60 seconds.

Navigation: I will try to figure out how to get rid of the dot. I believe that it may require a CSS change. The line under the title would be better.

NFA logo: Moved it to the upper left corner. As an aside and to put it bluntly, I think the logo stinks. I could redesign it but they have used it for so long that I think it is not worth it - there would be an ad nauseum number of reviews to come to a consensus.

Home page: The gadget only has a setting for margin, so I moved the sidebar to the right side of the page - there was not a default setting for padding and I don't want to modify the theme's CSS until I get more experience.

I hope these comments are satisfactory to you. Let me know.

    Hi Brett,

Confirmed just now that I was not signed in. I just typed in a random SC members eMail address using the Register button and somehow became logged in as him. I needed to enter a code with the eMail address. From there I completed the members name on the next page and bada-boom, a new volunteer!

Regarding the question... do we allow the public to sign-up using our website. Never came across that idea before. Hmm. I think it would be a good question for the SC, and in the meantime my reaction is not to encourage it.

What is a random SC member? What was the name? If I understand you correctly you registered as a visitor to the site. I looked at the log of who registered and I sent you an image of the registrants in your email.

Still not quite understanding what you did. May be easier to communicate over the phone 206 524-1301.

Really nice work!   I'm just beginning to noodle around with the site but one idea struck me: Is there a way for all the outings to be added to my calendar instead of having to do it individually?

    Thank you for the compliment.

There are individual calendars for each of the categories of events. The NFA Calendar under Welcome should have all the events listed. To make things easier for you can add an RSS reader to the NFA Calendar. Or if you are only interested in a specific calendar then add a reader to whichever one you are interested in.

If you don't see the calendar, you are probably in List View and you should switch to Calendar View.
