Lake Kapowsin is located just south of the towns Orting and Graham in Pierce County. The scenery reminds me of Pass Lake, but without highway noise! Very pristine.

It is about 50 miles one way from downtown Seattle and takes about 1 hour twenty minutes to get to the WDFW Lake Kapowsin Boat Launch. Here there are two parking lots, a restroom, and a boat ramp with an extended dock next to it. There are no houses on the lake, very pristine and quiet scenery abounds. No gas engines are allowed either, but electric motors are very popular.

The Lake is 490 acres, quite large for human powered vessels, and there is good fishing right from the boat ramp, so you need not go far if you don’t wish to. There are quite good shoreline trails in both directions from the ramp for shore fishing. There are some areas open enough for full backcasting. There is something here for every fisherman. Bass, Crappie, Perch, Sunfish, and yes, it is stocked annually with Rainbow Trout.

Light rods like 4-5 weight with light tippets if you’re going for the Bow’s. Good dry fly selections and maybe a few small streamers like the Wooly Bugger work best. Any of the flies taught in the tying class will be good selections to use here.

Bring your own drinking water, sunscreen, lunch, sunglasses, etc. to handle being on the water in the sun. Since this is close by, I recommend getting there between 7-8am to get ahead of a potential crowd.

If you’re on flotation, bring a camera and binoculars. The scenery here is stunning!
