Catching fish is a ton of fun. Catching fish on a fly that you tied with your own hands is even more fun. We’re offering beginning fly tying, a series of 6 classes taught by Eric “Dinty Moore” Olson and David Paul Williams. Students will learn two patterns each class and receive the recipe and materials for two copies of each pattern.

Each class will build on the skills learned in the previous session so by the end of the course students will be able to proficiently tie some very challenging flies. We will learn about thread control, maintaining proper thread tension and training our fingers to manipulate materials. We’ll learn about different tying materials and how to select good materials. We’ll even learn a bit about how to fish the flies we tie. Students will end up with a great selection of trout flies that will catch fish in our lakes and streams, plus a couple of saltwater flies and even a terrific topwater bass fly.

Here is a list of tying tools that students need to bring:

  • Bobbin
  • Bobbin threader
  • Bodkin
  • Hackle pliers
  • Vise
  • Scissors
  • Dubbing twister
  • Whip finisher (optional)
  • Tying Lamp (optional)

Get the best vise (pedestal or C-clamp) and scissors you can afford. Materials for the flies will be furnished by NFA.

The list of flies that will be tied include carey special, woolly bugger, chironomid, pat stone, pheasant tail nymph, gold rib hare’s ear,  elk hair caddis, royal wolf, compara dun and dun parachute.  Add to that immense educational base will be Dave’s input when and where to use the flies! The cost of the class is $70 for members and $85 for nonmembers which includes the materials to tie all of the flies and a description and pictures of all the flies to be tied during the class.  If you are a nonmember and sign up for the class, you can join the club at any time during the class and $15 will be credited toward your membership. The patterns the class will tie were originally selected by Jim Higgins who did an excellent job of choosing patterns that build on skills learned each week so that by the end of the class students will be able to tie many patterns that are not only excellent flies to fish but will develop skills to tie many other different patterns. The class will start February 26th.
